August 29, 2005 - this morning I made phone calls to friends inviting them to ride out the hurricane at my home.  I have no idea how bad the store may turn out to be for us, but it's been 40 years since hurricane Camille came so close to striking the New Orleans area.  And from all reports it seems like Katrina is going to be another Camille.  If this monster takes a worse scenario path, the entire region could see destruction on a scale never imagined by those living in this area.I keep thinking back to the devastation I saw in Mississippi after Camille and say little prayer that the storm will somehow make return to the west, but I don't think it's not happen.

Simona is bringing the dogs up later and she should be here about five, but I have no idea when Harris or Noel will get off their lazy but it's and get out of meterie.  If they wait too long they can he stuck in traffic on the causeway, and possiblybe caught on the road with a full force of this monster hits.  All I can do now to make what corporations I can, charge from my batteries and ensure the radios are working condition.  But now think I need your Red Cross and see what's going on their, our communications department is in poor shape and I was hoping we have another year two to make it ready for such hurricane.  But looks like times up!
.

ops.GIF (10369 bytes)Well, I'm back from the American Red Cross office, and I have one of the parishes emergency operations center radios with me.  Normally this radio would be left in communications room at the Red Cross so we would have communications directly to EOC to augment the amateur radio is that we have in operation. However, even the Red Cross realized how bad the storm was not be, pack their bags and headed north 50 mi. to set up a secondary operations center at Mount Herman.

I'm not sure what was the scariest aspect as I walked out of the Red Cross office carrying one of the OEP 450 mHz radios, could be the fact that they actually trusted me with parish communications equipment?, or could it be that in their haste to leave, they did not care if they could talkback to St. Tammany are not? Needless to say, I don't have much faith in the OEP radio system.  However, I do have a that with one of the guys from emergency management that a 450MHz system will crash and burn if the winds reach over 100 mi. an hour.

Either way it did not and still meet with a great deal of confidence of our ability to survive the oncoming storm. So now it seems that all Red Cross communications for St. Tammany Parish will be conducted out of my house.  Joy! Joy! I had at least one advantage, that being everyone else evacuating to my house was a ham radio operator.  So finding people to stand radio watch would not be difficult, the difficulty arose when I remembered that there were only two general class operators,Harris -- KB5BFK, and myselfto stand HF watch.  But once the FCC declared the area to be a communications emergency, and that its there were general press operators on the premises that problem one away quickly.

The bad part about running all Red Cross communications out of my house was that we had to set up in the living room as the Windows in my hand shack were destroyed, and with only a low plastic to keep what about I wanted to get my radios to a dryer area. however, in giving up my dining table and forcing everyone to eat off of the coffee table in front TV. but was no surprise to me that hereby was very happy to sit down from the TV eat as everyone needed a little break from reality, sell after the news was over with, somebody would go to my DVD collection and readout titles.  Once we had a consensus on a title, it was stuck into the player and was almost like while as a child everyone would gather around the TV for a few hours entertainment. however, there were times we had to turn down the radios to use TV, and other times we had turned down the TV sort operator to use radio.  That was the only part was damned inconvenience, but we made it work.

Simona just called for cell phone to tell me that she was on Highway 21, but at a dead stop.  To say look like a sea of taillightsat all you can hear was caught once the background.  We have had at least two good days of notice of this approaching storm, and people are now just taking action, just now moving out of town.  I started making preparations to three days ago hoping that the extra food and water would not be needed, and what would normally be a 20 Minute drivewill most likely take two hours.  October that brought her best option would be too get on to state Highway 1077 and go to Goodbee and come into Covingtonthe back way.   Hopefully the traffic might be a little lighter and cut sometime off of her trip.

I called Harris, but it took over 30 minutes to get through since all cell sites are being overloaded.  This is something I preached about for years but no one listened as it seems that was nothing more them big mouth crackpot and had no concept what she was talking aboutI hate to be somebody who's that I told you so, and is to be the only place I say, I am very sorry that I am right.  Anyway, Harris is on the south end of the causeway with Noel Sr. following, but Noel Jr. is still screwing around and Metairie. if you wait too long he made just not get out and I have no idea where if it sounds above sea level were not.  And no one knows how deep the will get if the levies breach.

house.GIF (20432 bytes)August 30, 2005 - Something will be up about five o'clock now what sure what it was so I made my way to the living room where I found a large branch from an oak tree sticking halfway through the house.   The tree next-door fell into the house destroying 3 windows, crushing the wall in and destroying the roof over the port on the opposite side of the house.  The next hour went by so fast there was no time to be scared as we worked to get the tree out of the window and board it up to stop the wind and rainthat was pouring in.At the same time, Harris came up with his face covered with blood.   Last night we begged him to get a generator out of his suburban before the wins.

But no, he knew better than everybody else and he waited until winds were over gale force to go into his truck.  Well, since it had to be so stubborn, or stupid depending upon one's point of view he was in his truck when the Oak tree that struck the house crushed  his vehicle and came damned close to killing him. The tree destroyed three vehicles and heavily damaged a fourth, my Jeep Cherokee. However, this is not the time to worry about vehicles, this is time to save them one's ass!

Why the scariest sounds that any of us heard this morning was that of falling trees.  Being hit with 1 was enough, and the idea of having more trees slamming into the house was unnerving.  My house is very old and was originally built as a two-story with the upstairs apartment being the managers home, and downstairs a shop for repairing horse drawn carriages.  Needless to say, my house is about 100 years old and was well built.  But I have no idea or a much more damage it can take before sections begin to collapse. in addition, we are worried about our only means of exiting the house as it was blocked by the down a tree, and by the debris from the house after the strike. The right thing left for us to do was to buckle down and hope for the best, but then came a sound that scared the hell out of everyone. A falling tree hit a natural gas meter on my neighbors house, and within a few minutes they smell of natural gas filled the air even though the win was still blowing at gale force with gusts that were much higher.

With branches still falling off the trees not as dared go outside.  There is just too many things flying about, and someone else's injured there is no way to get medical assistance other than what is available from my trama kit, and the first aid training that is Noel Sr. and I have had in the past.  But we are no means trained or with four major trauma incident. I am not even sure if we can get to the gas meter, can we turned off.  It all depends upon where the tree broke the pipe, if it's after the cutoff valve we will be in good shape.  However, if it's busted on the street side of the valve, there is a very good chance we could have either an explosion or structure fires if the gas ignites.

It seems we got lucky with the broken gas line, as the valve was on the outside the break.  Noel and I crawl across trees and a round down power lines until we reached the gas meter.  There was only enough from one person to get in there, so Noel took a crescent wrench and a rag, and crawled through the branches until he reached the meter. after soaking the rag Noel placed it over the valve, and gently turned it into the gas stop flowing. once the gas flow was stop, life at my house began to get better as my gas pressure returned allowing us to cook and heat water.   Having hot water may not sound like much, but when it's going to be in the mid-nineties with no air-conditioning a hot shower is one luxury everyone looks forward to evening.  And having gas to cook with means there's a hot meal in your future and more importantly I hot cup of coffee in the morning to get out.

However, was still trapped in my neighborhood as there are trees down everywhere.  A few years ago they elected a new mayor who is the tree hugger from hell who is part of our campaign promise that no more trees would be cut down, not even the sick ones like the tray that almost what my house. so when the winds reached 80 mi. an hour, trees began to fall everywhere and in some places covered the entire street for city block. the only reason the street House was cleared quickly, is that the fire department is just down the street and 25th Ave. is more the primary routes to the west side of town.  So within three to 4 Days That St., along with 21st which is part of Highway 21 was cleared to allow emergency traffic to move around town.  In addition the local hospital is on Highway 21, and access to the hospital had to be clear.

September 2, 2005 - today I was able to make it over to the office of emergency management.  Normally this would be a five-minute drive, However, today it took almost 30 minutes because of down the trees and power poles.  Getting into the building was a lot of fun also as the first person I ran to the very tired deputy sheriff who had losses since the humor with unauthorized people trying to gain access to the EOC.even wearing a red cross T-shirts with pictured identification hanging my collar, I had trouble gaining access. It only took 30 seconds for me to realize that he was not only tired, but he was also hungry and thirsty, so I went back to my vehicle and return with MRE's and bottled water.  You're not believe the expression on his than a feeling, he even asked why I was giving it to them.  My response was, American Red Cross, as I pointed to the logo on my shirt and with that I had no further problems getting into the EOC. however, that was just beginning because once I reached the EOC office entrance there is another deputy that I had to get past.  Luckily, he was in a little better mood being that he was an air-conditioning, one sites play now is there to see the director, Dexter Accardo, he sent a runner to tell Dexter that I was outside.   About 10 or 15 minutes pass before Dexter came out and his first words to me were I don't have any time what do you want?  I informed him that was there find out what we can do for him as far as communications went home.  once I told him that we can get a message to Baton Rouge which is the capital Louisiana, he said I have only one message a need sent. any rabbit pencil and paper and scribbled down notes and stated that this message was to be sad until we got apply he needed. this question was "where is a National Guard?".

Began in a message, Turner went back into the EOC. Intern, I handed the message to one of my operators with very simple instructions. they were to get on whatever frequency necessary and send Dexter's message every 15 minutes until he received a response.  Once he got a real answer, he was to deliver it to the deputy sheriff at EOC office door. before the hurricane, EOC and most of its place that had very little knowledge of amateur radio, and therefore had no use for us calling hams glorified CB'ers. well now is time for us glorified CB'ers to show them that we not only had the means to communicate over long distances even during a disaster, but we were professional in a manner of our operations.  Once Dexter got his reply, he began to rely on us more and more until I had to station and operator added to ask outside of the EOC office door so they can hang and messages, and he could relate them back to my house, or other stations so messages can be sent and received, and then relayed back to the operator at the EOC. I don't think emergency management will ever have the same view of amateur radio again.  I'm not trying to say that we were his savior, we'll provide a service that he needed at that time and if he ever needs as the future the amateur community will be at his service.

.

September 5, 2005 - it's been a rough few day sense Katrina devastated the area, and the only advantages we have over my neighbors is that we have an operational generator, and I am a DirecTV subscriber. so all we had to do was realigned the satellite dish and plug television into the generator and we were able to see what was going on nationwide.  But more importantly today I was out assigning amateur radio operators to shelters and other posts when I received a call to go to the Southern Baptist church on Highway 21.  The Southern Baptist relief organization had set up their operations center their, however, they were having problems.   I'm not sure who thought I could hear their problems, nor did I know what they were, but I went to see what I could do.  When I arrived I found that their primary need was for fuel for their chainsaws and their portable kitchens.  I know this sounds like it's a major issue, but it was one issue that I can solve very easily.   So, after about a Senate discussion I had to load their gas cans into the back toward their trucks and follow me too fuel distribution center where FEMA in the Red Cross were paying for fuel for emergency services.  After making arrangements for them to continue to get gasoline there I took their representative over two the propane supply Co. where we left the notes stating that they need propane in order to keep kitchens going.

Needless to say it wasn't much of an issue to me, and was solved within an hour, but they seemed very relieved.  And their gratitude they ask what they could do for me, and my response can you cut trees from in front and off of my house?  The very next morning there were 10 or 12 volunteers with chainsaws and other gear removing all the trees for my house.  Then they began to clear the street from 20 5th Ave. to my front door. I guess as it was for me to solve their problems, and considering it to be simple, when they cleared my street so we could drive to the front door my house, and actually walk up the stairs without crawling over the remains of 100-year-old tree was nothing less than wonderful.  It was becoming a task to carry water and other supplies one half block while climbing over in under felled trees, and it also added to our security than if a fire did breakout, the fire army could reach the house quickly.

stormy1.GIF (29732 bytes)September 6,2005 - Well hallelujah and passing ammunition, the cell phones are starting to work again. I know this does that sound like much, but it allowed us a means to the augment amateur communications and passport traffic. however, with all good things this didn't last as cell phones when it out of operation. However, not everything was getting better, especially my neighborhood. Early this morning I heard noise downstairs they didn't sound quite right but did not give it second thoughtuntil I heard again, so I decided check it out just make sure that there was not a problem. However,we are still under martial law and I decided to take a weapon and stormy with me just in case there was a problem. prazosin down know me, stormy is a 95 lb. shepherd with little tolerance for strangers and around my house after the sun sets.  The weapon I chose was M1 Carbine with a 15 round clip and a flashlight strapped to the stock. I went down the front stairs quietly as possible thinking that there is someone on the backside of the house, I did not want to be here becoming. unfortunately, I was right as I found a blackmail attempting to break-in to the downstairs apartment.  Being all retired cop, I quietly approach to suspect switched on a flashlight and commanded him onto his belly.  Once I disarmed him and kicked his crowbar away, I placed him on his knees with his hands asked behind his head, and his ankles crossed.

Then stormy circled in front of him and sat down showing are pearly white teeth. it is about this time that I began to inform him that it was time to come to Jesus as I was about to introduce him personally, I continued this line of redbrick for a few minutes until a disturbing odor rose from his pants letting me know that I had scared them so badly that he had had a bowel movement. with this signal I knew that he was no longer threat and was actually scared death, so I called the dog off and soda and it was time for him to leave, but before he could stand up I let him know that I, or anyone else here caught him or one of his buddies around my house after the sunset, well there would be slow walking in sad music next day.  I don't think all having more problems around here even though there have been many break-ins in the area.

Is has actually gotten to the point where some subdivisions have posted armed guards at the entrances with large signs that stated "you loot, we shoot".  In New Orleans the police and the National Guard running gunfight with relief helicopters being fired upon as they drop food and water, and rescue those trapped by floodwaters. Is amazing how quickly the animals have crawled out of their holes and are trying to take over the city. News helicopters from outside the area are showing pictures of looters, these people aren't stealing food or water, or even dry clothes. Their stealing plasma TV's, stereos and the new cars from car lots that were not flooded. it is my understanding that even the drugstores are being stripped of all the drugs and cases of bottled water are being left behind. the Governor signed an Executive Order giving law-enforcement and National Guard permission to use deadly force if they felt their lives or the lives of civilians were in danger. I always thought that if a major disaster was to strike, the criminal element would come out in force almost like some Third World disorganized army try to take control of the city.  In the past I hope that this was nothing more than a worst-case scenario that would never happen, however it seems to be happening now!

September 10, 2005 - is that a few days since I've had time to write anything other than reports.  And things are starting to get better especially since amateur at you operators from across the country have began to flood into the area.  They could not arrived in other time as my operators are starting to burnout and needed break.  I had one operator that was in a shelter for nine days straight with no relief, and he was losing his sense of humor with the DSHR volunteers that showed up a few days earlier.  Instead of coming in with an open mind and set goals, few of these Red Cross volunteers came man like conquering hero's, or save us from ourselves.  One of them walked up to an operator and told him that he was not doing anything so he go out and unload food and play security guard. afterwards things that even sillier when one of the out-of-state volunteersbegan complaining that she needed a hot shower because she was filthy and this was more than she bargained for.  The woman had only been at the shelter nine hours, and the rest of us who had been here for 11 days were ready to take her out back and shoot her, or at least help for Packer bags and give a ride to the airport so she could go home!
September 11, 2005 - Today passed without anyone reflecting upon the significance of the day as we were dealing with our own disaster.  With the only difference is being that 9/11 was man-made, and our disaster was one of nature.this morning I went to Coop Drive where Red Cross and FEMA set up food and water distribution point.  I first went to the back as normal check in with the distribution manager, then I went up towards the front where the MRE's were stored under a large tent.  I was surprised to see that Red Cross volunteers manning this area were from France, members of the international Red Cross that were flown in to assist with disaster relief.  I asked to was the person in charge and walked over to him and introduced myself.  after thanking him, and his crew for traveling thousands of miles to assistant disaster relief, and in a moment of weakness I could not help myself, so I gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.  Not speaking French I had no idea what it was saying, but the tear in his eye and the smile spoke volumes.  Someone tell me that there was a Norwegian Red Cross units in the area, but I was unable to find them. is too bad, why their members could have been a cousin or other family member as my father was from Norway.

As with every day since Katrina it has been oppressively hot with no breeze to speak of. if you'd ever spent anytime in the deep South in the summer, you know that September is not a cool monthas temperatures during the day can reach into the mid to upper nineties, and the nights can be in the low 80's,and upper 70's is usually the Norm until midnight or later. Even with a few floor fans is almost too high to eat, and all you want is a hot shower to help you cool off. I'll be damned glad when the electricity comes back on, but I'll think that's the before least another week.

September 18, 2005 - today I used to Noel Sr. car to go to habitat for humanities store.  I was hoping that they, by homebuilding organization might be able to help me with my house as I am limited to the amount of work I can do on the house due to to my disability.  What I needed was a few of their volunteers that come over to my house and nail a sheet of plywood over the window opening on the second floor. of the past eight years so I had volunteered with them in their warehouse for a few weekends just rearranging paint cans in merchandise, and thought if any organization be of help me they would.  However, I was totally unprepared for awaited me at the store.as I walk in there were group of people standing around a desk. but before I could say three steps to the desk whorl of home that store was close and I had to leave.  So I asked the guy if you give me some information, and I explain to my problem.  Without giving my question second thoughts he looked at me and said "there's nothing we can do for you". my response was even shorter when I asked "why".  but nothing in a prepared me for for what I was about the year, but before I got to I had to push him for answer that wasalmost like pulling hens teeth. There are still times when I wonder if that day really happened?, or was it just a bad dream when I was told by a so-called humanitarian organization volunteer that was the wrong color.

I am not a racially motivated person, and as the Red Cross volunteer race never played any part when someone was in need. it away with all black-and-white, but that was the papers are was reading from to see what I could give a family which is lost everything! what I heard that I had no response, all I could do is turn around and walkout wondering why he wouldn't say such thing. so when I came home I got out the duct tape and repaired the stairs in the plastic and reattached screen where the wind blown it free. I will never, as long as I live ever asked Habitat for Humanity for anything, nor will I ever donate materials or money to that organization.  And when the day comes that somebody asked me about Habitat for Humanity, I will be more than happy to tell my story to them in hopes that they too will never donate to that organization.

September 20, 2005 - today the insurance adjuster finally came by and the first word said his mouth was and I quote "looks like flood damage me". and after the week I've had been so I need here anyone tell me as there was no flood damage to my house.  Yes I do live in Southeast Louisiana, but my houses 27 ft. above sea level with good downhill drainage to the river and no homes in my area were flooded. The adjusted did not want to hear that, and I'm sorry to Hell, their many things in this life that I do not want to hear either.   However, is just a fact of life and he needs to get a grip.

For the next hour I took him around like to the puppy showing him all the damage and explaining what happened because a damage since the down the tree has been removed.  As I expected, he started in saying that he was not sure if he could put what I said in his report since he had no evidence.  This was another thing I had been expecting, and I had taken pictures of everything and burned them to CD in anticipation of his arrival, and line of crap. Needless to say,  having a CD with over 50 pictures on and a Word document with the pictures embedded , a description of the damage that appeared in each photograph and arrows pointing to the damage spots was more than enough evidence that what I was telling him was the truth.

However, who knows what runs through the minds of insurance investigators and the agencies they work for. So I guess out of step away to sea with the insurance company says when they send me their conclusions.  But I will not hold my breath that this happens anytime said as mostly insurance companies that you hear about it and use these days are screwing everyone in sight without kissing them when they're finished.

September 28, 2005  Just after the telephones began to work earlier this month, I applied to FEMA for one of their camper trailers and today one of their inspectors came by to mark out the area where the trailer.  The problem is, they don't know when it will be delivered and was even worse wants its delivered how long will them too hook it up.  The reason I say this is that on the news lately, FEMA has delivered trailers, did not look them up and just walked away without giving anyone a key.  Can you imagine that?  Your home is just been destroyed by flood or wind, and just about every possession you have has been destroyed.  You're sleeping in your car with no place to bathe or cook, and in the mornings you wake to see a brand new camp or trailer park or property and know that you can not use.

At least I can still stay in my house, I have electricity and plastic over the windows, or what I should say the holes were the windows once were.  But it's so much better than white thousands of people have nowas all they can do is what about other cars so they can remain at their homes to protect what will they have from thieves that no nothing more than to steal instead of work.  their shower is a garden hose, and I don't even want to imagine what their toilet is. since they have no place to cook their meals come in the form of MRE's and handed out by the National Guard and the Red Cross. I have been some of these areas doing damage assessment, and the stench from the rotting debris in the hot sun is overwhelming at times.  I do believe it or those homes belong to me, I would be living in Texas, or the State.  Anyplace other than a reclaimed swampthat in many cases has reverted to its natural state.

In some areas I have seen houses that have been cut in half by trees, and that there is one less than a block from me that the whole back of the house has been crushed by a pine tree, and the people who own the house are still living there.   My house to considerable tree damage when no tree slammed into it, but did not care gaping holes in the walls.  The only damage was the Windows being destroyed and the fireplace was separated from the structure so when it rains water cascades down the face of the fireplace, much like a small waterfall. So, with a little plastic and a roll of mosquito screening I was able to stop the little flying critters from visiting at night and the plastic helped keep in the cool air from the air conditioner.  Both summer houses are seen I have no idea or what they're doing other then draping a tarp over the roof and down to the ground anchoring it with stones in tree branches.  As I see all the destruction around my home, neighborhood and the region, I wonder how long it will take for all of us to get back to what I laughingly referred to as normal?

October 9, 2005 - Today started out like every other day, and I expected in the same way with no surprises, or anything accomplished. I get the morning walk into the kitchen where the cabinets are falling apart from the impact of the tree and fix a cup of coffee as I have no appetite.   I found that last week that my diabetic A1C test results came back and my three-month average was 11.4.  For those that don't know much about diabetes normal blood sugar for that test is between 5.2 and 6.5, and being the MRE's for lunch and dinner and the stress levels have been under has pushed my blood sugar levels to a dangerous point.

To be perfectly honest, I really don't care. this might come as a surprise, or maybe even a shock but there have been times I have given serious consideration to putting a bullet between my ears and the only thing that stopped me, the only reason I found stay alive with my dog.  I did not know what happened to her once I was gone, what kind of people would take her or even if she would be put down because no one had time for her, just like many my dear friends have had no time for me.

October 12, 2005 -  This morning they delivered my home in the trailer and proceeded set it up.  Unfortunately, it was the wrong trailer and the people who delivered it didn't seem to give a rats ass telling me that I didn't like it, I should call FEMA complaint.   Well I took your advice and call FEMA informing them that they were supposed to deliver what is called an ADA trailer, for those without know what ADA mean it stands for "Americans with disabilities act".  However the trail they delivered at propane tanks for he cooking, and I explain to the woman on the phone that there was no way my disability I could change propane tanks, and ask if they please change a trailer out the correct one.

After spending over 30 minutes on hold, she came back on the line to tell me that it will be taking care of within a week, and I have nothing to worry about.  However, knowing the speed and efficiency of the United States government, and how fast FEMA came to our rescue at the beginning, I am not to hold my breath. However, at least it's a warm place to sleep as the winds blow through the destroyed windows as if it were not even covered. So I guess I should be grateful, or not sure what to happen around a propane, I guess others have to wait and see.

October 20, 2005 - For the past month I have been calling everyone that I know, people that I have been favors or for many years and have never ask for anythig in return.  I have to pack my house up and get everything in boxes so they can be stored to make room for the contractors was the insurance company settles.  If three or four of them would show up one Saturday or three hours or so, everything in my house and we packed up in boxes and out of the way.   But no one could come, 15 people no one could spare three hours to help me.   However, there were two of them that asked that they could drop off their computers to be repaired. for years that's all I have done for these people, I've kept their computers running at no cost.  If they had gone to war the local computer stores it would cost them $50-$60 per hour with a one-hour minimum as a diagnostic fee.  But I have never charged in a cent, and most likely saved them at least $500 over the past five years.  However, it seems that the only reason they had me as a friend was to be their free technician.

My response was, yes, bring the computer or over and I'll get too soon as I can.  However, it will be $25 an hour for the repairs.  That way I could take the money I earned to pay someone to come and help me pack my house.  You would've thought I had shot in the foot with cannon when they realized that my services were no longer free, and their response was just as I expected. "if I have to pay for someone to fix my computer, I will take into a real computer store".  needless to say, I had no problem in giving him directions to the only computer store in town that is open, and which then the best of luck the idiots that work there. So it seems I have a few less friends now, and I thank God for it as these people are not worth the powder it would take to blow them to hell.  I'm beginning to give serious thought to moving out of the state once my house repaired.

October 28, 2005 - it's been over two weeks since they delivered my trailer and promised to replace it with a ADA trailer, so I thought was time to call them once again and see what was the progress are trailer I can actually living.  The trailer I have came with two small propane tanks, and with the cold weather and then scan of the trailer I have gone through both tanks and had two weight until someone to come by and take tanks off so I could put them in the car and go them fill.  Last night it went into the low thirties, and somewhere around 4 o'clock in the morning I ran out of gas, and I swear I woke up with ice on my nose.

Anyway, when I called a woman checked her computer and said that there has never received a requestfor trailer swapout, and my files did not indicate that I was eligible for a ADA trailer.  At that very moment I knew I was in for a long time on the phone having them check the into my FEMA records to prove that my disability get qualified me for the handicapped trailer.  needless to say, my apprehension about the delays was well founded as the freshly charge batteries on my cordless phone die for I can finish my conversation with them.  So I called back of my cell phone hoping that we get the same person, however, as it always does United States government's I that somebody different, and we started all over again. finally, the woman discovered that yes, I did qualify for a ADA trailer and they would do their best to get one out in a few days.  Why is it I cannot find any solace or reassurance in her words?

October 31, 2005 - Once again holloween is here as time goes or by some candy for the kiddies, but with everything that's going on are not sure how many kids will be knocking on my door this year.  However, I needed by least one small bag just in case.  I also had to work on the lighting the stairs so no one breaks her neck try to get candy.  The last thing I need is a kid to be heard from our property does the storm damage and poor lighting conditions.  Maybe others turn off the lights and hang up a sign saying no one home, and hope they passed me by for the other houses.

Problem is every time stormy hears a noise, she first goes into a low growl as followed shortly by a high-pitched bark that tends to get everyone's attention and would give away the fact that someone is home. so I guess going to the store for a candy, and hope they has to sugarfree candies for me.

November 5, 2005 - Much to my surprise FEMA has once again arrive with a new trailer, but there's a problem with this trailer as it is not a ADA trailer.   Instead, they are delivering what is known as a handicap friendly trailer that has a door wide enough for wheelchair.  There is one advantage in the trailer that they delivered and that is its electric, where the other when that they're pulling out his propane.  However, I have misgivings about the way it's laid out, I am not sure how will this can work.  But I'll give it a shot, after all, I'll have much choice.

As for the rest of the day the insurance company called to let me know that my claim was still being processed.however, they must send another claims adjuster because they don't believe all damages that the house stained were due to the hurricane.  I can see now it's not be long drawnout fight, held most likely have a higher journey like everybody else.  I was hoping it would get this point, but I think I will pass to hope.   meanwhile my house continues to take damage from rain, and is not a whole lot I can do about it.

with all the help I've asked for, and none that I received a measure of my house survive until repairs can be started.  All I can do is try to get someone to the proper my house.  I called the Corps of Engineers would start a program blue-roof to hopefully have a tarp install to cover the gaping hole between the fireplace in the house.   They're supposed to be accurate tomorrow a day after take a look at a sign all papers giving them access to the property, and a hole harmless agreement, I am not holding my breath as far as federal government goes!

November 8, 2005 - Will there may be hope it acts as the Corps of Engineers came, but the house and we signed all necessary papers for them to put a car on my roof.  They tell me they be back in today's which should be the 10th, I'll can say is them not to hold my breath.   But I am amazed that they actually showed up when they said they would.  By now you might be wondering why I have no use for FEMA or the other so-called disaster relief organization's.  It started when I first registered with FEMA and they immediately told me that I was not entitled to any assistance because I did not see flee the storm.  By remaining at my house to safeguard my property, and many aspects opened a shelter for my friends I had screwed myself.  However, my friends all received $2000 each, and is a good chance they may get another $2500 in disaster relief.   I also heard that they were helping two pay for repairs to People's vehicles that were damaged in the storm, so I called them up and a inspector was sent out to look at my car.  About three weeks later I called FEMA and the woman looked into our records and tell me that it's the inspector stated that my vehicle had only cosmetic damage and was fully rode worthy.

jeep.JPG (46380 bytes)I'll leave this in your capable hands to decide if you're right or wrong.  When the to tree hit, a crushed for the hood down onto the engine, stripping off the front and bumper tearing off all of the whites of the front and shoving the radiator into the engine.  But I guess that's wrote worthy! I tell the woman said she thought it was so road worthy, why don't they send someone out to drive and around the block. and if they make it without burning up the engine, they can help me duck tape the lights back on! Apparently I did not amuse her, and she said there is nothing else I have people with real problems to deal with. before she could hang up I asked her if she had a vehicle?  And her answer was yes.  Then I asked her how would you like to walk to the store, or anyplace else care to go?  Her answer was "just take the bus". so I just had to break the bad news to her that there is no bus service where I live, but it made no difference you said I hope you have a nice day and hung up.  I hope now you understand why I have developed a bad attitude when it comes to getting any assistance from our federal government.  I would have more luck if I took over small Caribbean island and declared war United States, lease that way I can get foreign aide, but my luck they would just drop a small nuke.

November 11, 2005 - for some unknown reason I thought today was pointed be one of the better ones as about eight o'clock morning contractors for the Corps of Engineers showed up to put a blue roof from my house. but once again victory was snatched out of the jaws of defeat when one of the contractors came down from the roof to tell me that it's they could not put are on my roof because there was no hole in it. and that just because the fireplace separated from the house by 3 inches and was allowing more towards the living room did not matter to them.  The Corps of Engineers in their infinite wisdom stated that the only way they could put a blue room for a house was if it had a whole over to foot-wide in the roof. so they packed up their toys and went away as I was looking up the number to call the Corps of Engineers to find out why they could help me. I guess I raise so much hell that I got someone's attention and a supervisor can buy this afternoon to explain their regulations and rules to me and apologize that my fireplace look like a cascading waterfall it rained, but it wasn't their problem. once again, screwed by my own government.  You know it's not the mind being screwed by my own government, but at least they can kiss me afterward.  I swear to God I am starting to feel like a cheap whore, but no, whores get pay. So I guess it just makes me a slute!
November 13, 2005 - It seems that my misgivings about this new FEMA trailer were correct as the floor of the bathtub is 17 in. higher than for the trailer.  The only thing handicapped approved about the bathtub is a safety rails encircled the inside.  But when you only have one hand, and that hand can grab crap the safety rails becalmed totally begun to and useless which I found out last night why lost my balance and grabbed for a rail but could not hold on allowing me to fall out of the bathtub striking my mouth on the Cabinet's across from bathtub and shattering a tooth. After I came back from the Dentist I called FEMA once again voiced my protests, and complaints about the trailer.  I also gave in the bad news about my toothin the bruising that ran from my eye socket to my neck.   Needless to say I was a spitting into the wind and no one cared as long as my fall didn't damage their precious trailer.  However, the woman said they'll do their best to get me the right trailer out as soon as possible.  But as everything else I would have to wait and see what happens.
November 16, 2005 - I just got off the phone with a friend gave me the best news that had the longtime it seems he has an old station wagon that runs pretty good but needs a little work and he's willing to give it to me knowing that I don't have any transportation. it's an old 1989 Mercury Sable station wagon with about 150,000 mi. on it.  It may be old, and it may not be worth much, but when you've been without transportation for almost three months is a welcome sight.  So tomorrow friend is taking me to LaPlace, LA to pick the car up.  I'm just hoping that the damage to the air-conditioning system is not too much, and the oil leaks can be fixed cheaply because I don't have a lot of money to jump into it. no matter what, in the style be able to go this drugstore, grocery store or wherever else I need to without having to beg ride and wait five days until its convenience for my dear friends to show up. I have simply amazing that before hurricane Katrina I never gave the second thought that when someone called me to do them a favor I would just jump and jeep and go. the only time I had put them off for a day was when I had a job to do and just could not get away at the time. But now when I called them for anything I had to make an appointment. Something tells me that my time it's all with the number of friends I have will be greatly reduced and I doubt been very seriously if I will make it more. Their times I wonder what did I do in my past to deserve to be treated like this. and the one person I consider to be an acquaintance that I rarely see or talked to this gave me a car!  I do believe times, but I need to reevaluate all of the relationships I have, and it's sad to say that while the relationships is my sisters
November 22, 2005 - it's been almost two weeks since I taught the theme of about getting me the right trailer and I am still running up against brick a wall with my own government.   from the news reports that I'm sure most people have seen FEMA is bending over backwards to give the so-called refugees in taxes than other states apartments and money and anything else that they need to make their lives O' so much better.  These are same poor people that many witnessed stealing plasma TV's and cars just after the hurricane.  These are same ones that within days of arriving in Texas began to rob the local and flee back to the Astrodome so they would blend into the crowds and could be caught.  Maybe I'm just feeling a little bitter, I thought the government had served in the military for within years would have treated me just a little bit better than they have!needless to say,if any repairs are going to be done to my home, I will have to do it myself.

I just wish I could find a job as having an income other than my VA pension would help me do the necessary repairs so I could move back in, and get rid of this damned the trail.

December 2, 2005 -  to my surprise FEMA delivered the third trailer today, and this one is a true ADA trailer.  However, when they were pulling the old trailer route they get my house, and tried to remove the trailer before I could get all of my personal belongings out.  There they were 14 able-bodied men standing around watching a handicapped woman unload her possessions while they did absolutely nothing.  My, I'm so glad I live in a civilized society! and well is about finished, they had the guts to come up and asked me could they use the bathroom in the house because they are a disconnected the plumbing from the trailer.  All I could do was smile at him and say "I hope you're wearing a diaper"and walk away. believe it or not he actually had the guts of a riverboat pirate as he started to open the door to my house and walk-in.  But he changed his mind real quick when Stormy stuck her head out the work showing in teeth.  I've never seen a guide to so fast in my life as he ran to the truck and climbed into the back of its to get away from my little puppy.
December 5, 2005 - Last night on the use the work talking about all these nonprofit organizations ever live in Southeast Louisiana to help rebuild homes, so this morning I called the television station to get information on these organizations and their phone number. Over the next three hours I called the so-called charitable organizations to ask for their help only to be told that whatever help I needed they were doing just the opposite.  In other words if I need my roof fixed their only tearing roofs off, if I need help putting up Sheetrock their only gutting houses, and since I live in St. Tammany Parish their only working in Orleans Parish which is new Orleans. needless to say the so-called chair organizations are no better than Habitat for Humanity, Corps of Engineers or FEMA.
December 24, 2005 - It's Christmas Eve, but I'm not too cheery. over the past four months I have been trying to find a job, repair my house and the food in the table.  And my mortgage Company has not made much easier as shortly after the storm they stated that it will let everybody go three months with no house notes, and move them to or the mortgage as a way to help out their customers.  Well I guess they change their mind as a few days ago I received a letter stating that they wanted the three months pay immediately, and that my mortgages about to be adjusted upward its.  What I call down development was no way that I could pay them over $2000 onetime, their representatives are talking about foreclosure and last week I received a letter stating that they just readjusted my mortgage up by over $400 a month to compensate for the three months of lost income than he had.  I warn you now, you ever finance a home, or refinance the one you have never, I mean never deal with AmericaQuest unless you enjoy being taken advantage period.

After I did mathematics, I found that after I pay my mortgage, lights, water and other bills I will have a whole $15 left over to buy groceries with.  Man oh man, I can eat high on the lot with that amount of money every month. it's now looking like I may have to do something I had never wanted to do in my life, and that is applied for food stamps just so I can have something to eat it really looks like it's going to be a great new year! will at least tomorrow I have a good meal to look forward to add my sisters.  So about 10 o'clock a pack of the mutt and will head down there.

January 3, 2006 - today at a phone call from a prospective employer who offered me a whole $9.50 an hour to run their entire IT department. Most people don't have an idea of what it takes to run a computer department for business, but it's quite a lot.  Most IT departments have an administrator for the servers, another administrator for e-mail servers and web sites and a technician to keep all the computers online.  I have never seen a company that paid less than $25 an hour for someone to administer a single server system, much less paid $9.50 an hour to do it all with no overtime. That's right, no overtime. and a wide me to come in on the weekends for free to update all the workstations and do any service work that could not be done during the week because it would slow down the servers or take some workstations off-line.

I know this is going to sound strange but all I could do was laugh uncontrollably, and when he asked why I was laughing I informed them that my last job paid $45 an hour and $700 a week per diem, and he wanted me to do more work for considerably less money! well, last thing I heard was in slamming the phone down and all I can say is that hope you can find somebody with my training and education go to his work for $9.50 an hour.  But I don't think he's going to.   So is turning out to be of great 2006, no job prospects, a damaged house that is being damaged more with each rainstorm and a mortgage company that seems to have the strangest sense of humor I've ever heard of.  I am not sure how much more is crap I can take for I lose what mind I have left.
