Update on Tri-State ARC
May, 9, 2005

This spring we just got a new 10 kW generator, that can be used with our old 25 kW generator.   You can see our emergency communications van and our new 16 foot long enclosed equipment trailer which as you can see is
fully loaded with equipment we need in an emergency.  We have been to so
many disasters we have learned from experience if we do not have it with us
we can forget about getting it at the disaster.

We are working on a grant for 150,000 for a new mobile light tower which we
can also put antennas on.  Wish us luck !
Thank you for your e-mail and keep up the good work

scares2.GIF (70185 bytes)The Tri States Amateur Radio Club's emergency communications van has equipment for SSB, CW, APRS, GPS , radio direction finding and ATV.  We operate on  H.F., VHF and UFH.  All of our equipment runs off of  two banks of deep cycle batteries with a

15 KW generator for back up.

We are nonprofit group of volunteers that specialize in disaster recovery and emergency communications. The van is a 1971 CHEVROLET we spent 7 years restoring it. The van has been redone top to bottom, front to back, inside and out.  We have communications equipment that will send a massage down the block, around town or around the world when needed.  We just started our web page, you can see a little more about us by going to Tri-States Website  If anyone has any ideas where we can get a grant to help us with this project please contact me at leewalt@powerbank.net

The Tri States Amateur Radio Club, Inc. A R E S group for the past five years we have been trying to get Federal Surplus equipment to help us with the work we do.  We are a nonprofit 501C3 group doing what every A R E S and RACES group does.  I have found an ARES group in Utah and another in Louisiana that have or are getting G.S.A. Federal surplus property to use.  Our group has been turned down two times, even though we are 501C3 and we do exactly what they do.  What I have been able to find out is, the Federal laws are NOT handled the same in every state !

If you read the Federal G. S. A. rules, there is a list of nonprofit organizations that have all ready been approved to get this surplus. Among them are the Boy Scouts,  Boy and Girl Clubs, Camp Fire Girls, Big Brother and Big Sister and MANY other groups.  Now my question is, in time of an emergency, don't you think an amateur radio ARES or RACES group would make better use of surplus equipment than the camp fire girls will? nothing against the camp fire girls, just to make my point. For some reason when the rules were written, ham radio was left out !  I am trying to get that changed and I need your help.
