Here are some helpful hints on getting an ARES Group going in your area, or reviving a defunct one.

So, you would like to start, or re-organize an Amateur Radio Emergency Service group in your area. Well, there are a few things you must first understand about what is involved in setting it up and measures you must take to protect group and volunteers in today's world.

At one time, all you need do was contact your state ARRL manager. He would appoint an EC (Emergency Coordinator) if there was not one for your county. Then it was just a matter of selecting the assistant ECs and getting Hams to volunteer their time.

However, in the modern world of law suites, and corporate support, a volunteer group must incorporate as a non-profit organization, and apply for IRS 501c3 status in order to be protected under the Volunteer protection act.

Also, large companies normally will not make donations of equipment or money if a volunteer organization does not follow the IRS guidelines as a non-profit organization. This means becoming a non-profit corporation and obtaining 501c3 status.

As you follow the links in this section, we will attempt to guide you through the pit falls and problems that are involved.
